Pitra Dosha Pooja is a sacred Hindu ritual performed to appease and seek blessings from the ancestors (pitras) and mitigate the effects of Pitra Dosha in one's horoscope. Pitra Dosha, or ancestral affliction, arises when the ancestors have not attained peace due to unfulfilled desires or unfinished business in their lifetime. This affliction can manifest as various challenges and obstacles in the life of their descendants. The Pitra Dosha Pooja aims to honor and pacify the ancestors, seeking their blessings for spiritual harmony and overall well-being.
Invocation of Ancestors: The puja begins with the invocation of the pitras through sacred chants and prayers. Offerings such as water, sesame seeds, rice, and sweets are made to honor the departed ancestors and seek their blessings.
Tarpana and Shraddha Rituals: Tarpana, the act of offering water mixed with sesame seeds and barley, is performed to satisfy the souls of the departed ancestors. Shraddha rituals, including the offering of food and donations to priests and the needy, are also conducted to honor and appease the ancestors.
Homam (Fire Ceremony): A homam dedicated to the pitras is an integral part of the Pitra Dosha Pooja. Offerings such as ghee, grains, and herbs are made into the sacred fire while chanting mantras. The fire symbolizes purification and transformation, purging negative ancestral influences and fostering spiritual harmony.
Remedial Measures: Specific remedial measures and rituals may be prescribed based on individual astrological charts and the severity of Pitra Dosha. These may include performing charitable acts, offering prayers at pilgrimage sites, and seeking guidance from experienced astrologers and priests.
